The course deals with the basic issues of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing from a theoretical point of view, with hints of geodesy, cartographic reference systems, databases, computer science and image processing, atmospheric physics, sensors, electromagnetic signals, Open Geospatial Web Services. From a practical point of view, the exercises will be focused on civil and environmental areas such as: infrastructure, buildings, hydraulics, hydrogeology.

Reference readings will be assigned during the course.

The course aims to provide the skills necessary to recognize, access, import datasets from remote sensing sources and basic elements to analyze and process these products in GIS and geo-spatial databases. Accessibility to geo-spatial datasets also includes the ability to access spatial WEB services made available in internet on-the-fly.

Basic knowledge of geodesy, cartography, positioning systems, databases of computer data, numerical calculation, atmospheric physics and electromagnetism are required.

The course consists of theoretical lessons followed by practical exercises on the field with laboratory and/or personal instruments (e.g. smartphones) and in class with opensource or licensed software.

It should be noted that class attendance and participation are prerequisites for passing the exam. The large time reserved for practical activities provides the opportunity for all students to experience directly the use of modern geomatics instrumentation.

The final exam is meant to test the acquaintance gained by the student
with the topics covered during the course and to review the training
experience and the delivered outputs.
